Which is better sterling silver or stainless steel jewelry?

This is a question we get asked often.

If you want something that will never tarnish and remain durable forever, stainless steel is what you are looking for. However, if you want a more intricate and unique piece, sterling silver is where you will find these designs.

Sterling silver is easier to bend and cut creating intricate pieces of jewelry.Sterling silver jewelry needs extra care. It will tarnish if kept in the open air or if kept safely in a jewelry box. You will need to clean and polish it often. If let to sit for too long, it will create a patina which may become difficult to clean. Silver is also a softer metal making it more susceptible to damage if worn daily. Sterling silver is hypoallergenic unless it is mixed with nickel which is a highly allergenic metal. Be sure to purchase sterling silver from a reputable jeweler as some will be mixed with nickel.

What exactly is stainless steel jewelry?  Stainless steel is made up of at least 10.5% chromium and no more than 1.2% carbon. These are combined with titanium creating its durability. It is this durability that makes more difficult to bend and cut therefore, you will not see the same level of intricate designs as you do in sterling silver.

The durability of stainless steel is what allows it to withstand the wear and tear of everyday activities, which can otherwise damage a ring. Apart from its durability and low maintenance, stainless steel is a great material for jewelry because it can have a variety of finishes, including brushed, engraved, matte, and glossy.
You can safely shower with your stainless steel jewelry and wash your hands while wearing a stainless steel ring without getting any damage on the metal. Wear your jewelry in the pool or the ocean, and rest assured there will be no damage to the jewelry.
For these reasons, stainless steel jewelry has become more popular in recent years.  It has become one of the top choices for wedding bands as well as engagement rings.  The metal is completely safe and hypoallergenic.  Earrings labeled hypoallergenic will usually have the post made in stainless steel.

Cleaning your stainless steel jewelry is also very simple.  Just a little soap and water and wipe with a soft cloth.

Jewelry designers have become more creative with the metal. You can now find more intricate designs and many are using 14kt or 18kt gold to plate the stainless steel creating higher end pieces.

Stainless steel jewelry is very affordable and versatile.  It complements any style and can be layered with any necklaces or bracelets you love to create a unique design that is all yours.
